Gouves
is not necessarily the most beautiful place for a holiday in Crete,
but it’s perfect for people who want a small laid back resort in a
tranquil environment close to Heraklion and a short distance from the
airport.
Set
along a coastline of sandy and rocky bays, Gouves is small traditional
and relatively unspoilt, however it still has most things that you
need for a successful holiday, like mini-markets, car and motorbike
rental, and of course bars and restaurants offering good food, good
wine and Cretan hospitality.
It
has a lovely sandy beach with water-sports and a little marina for
small boats. Being close to its neighbouring resorts of Kokkini Hani
and Hersonissos it gives you the chance to pop over if you fancy a
break, the small resort of Kokkini is laid back while Hersonissos is
large and action packed.
Up
on a hillside a couple of kms away sits the original old village of
Gouves, worth visiting to get the true flavour of Crete, it has a few
typical kafenia (cafes’) and tavernas. Local holiday attractions are
the archaeological sites in Kokkini Hani and Amnisos, the monastery of
Saint John, Skotino Cave one of the most impressive in Crete and the
ancient sites at Knossos.
JOURNEY TIME
Heraklion Airport to Gouves is approx 14Kms (7miles) - 20mins by taxi
