Makrigialos is a small charming
costal village just along the coast from Ierapetra, situated in the
south east of Crete. Once a well-kept secret - a tiny quiet village
with a lovely uncrowded beach
and a little harbour; the beach and the
harbour are still there, but the village has grown into
a
lively little resort in its own right, great for people who want a
village resort with a relaxed feel but with plenty of tavernas and
enough nightlife.
lying Some way from any major or developed tourist towns, Makrigialos
is situated along a coastline filled with secluded bays and quieter
beaches, and an impressive mountain backdrop with gorges that are
easily accessible and every bit as rewarding as the Samaria Gorge.
One
of the many attractions of a Makrigialos holiday is the beautiful main
beach with its blue sea shallow waters and great swimming; it has
merged with the neighbouring village of Analipsi to form a long narrow
stretch of sand and shingle. There is also another beach to the West
of Makrigialos which is wider and less busy. There are water-sports on
the beach and a good selection of beachside tavernas, as well as bars
and restaurants by the harbour.
For
the more adventurous there are Regular buses that run along the coast
to places like Ierapetra its fascinating neighbour whose Old Town has
narrow lanes, and an interesting mix of architecture and monuments,
testament to the town’s strategic importance to Romans, Turks and
Venetians who have all occupied this the southernmost point of Europe.
In
a nutshell Makrgialos is a laid back resort despite its growing
popularity, an attractive place to relax, sunbathe, and eat well.
