The most famous features of Matala are
its beach and its sloping cliffs and caves that were carved out by the
ancients into the rocks and cliffs.
The caves have over the years been the haunt of ancient Greeks,
Romans, fisherman, resistance fighters and a few wandering hippies
that achieved certain fame in the 60s and 70s.
Matala is one of the most
beautiful places in southern Crete. It's a small village surrounded by
natural landscapes and a lovely beach with crystal clear waters, the
beach has a secluded feel about it as it’s surrounded by striking high
cliffs. It’s a small laid-back resort set amongst wonderful
countryside with a memorable beach, picturesque waterside tavernas and
low-key nightlife… but can be fairly buzzy in the busy months.
JOURNEY TIME
Heraklion Airport to Matala is approx 75Kms (46miles) - 1hr 40mins by taxi
