Paleochora is a
popular lively resort at the base of the White Mountains on the
south-west coast of Crete; it’s actually a “real village” with a
constant population all the year round.
Nestling on a small
peninsular in a natural environment with fabulous scenery, Paleochora
sits on a promontory between two bays, the west bay has one of the
finest sandy beaches in the whole of Crete, a long and wide crescent,
shaded by tamarind trees, east bay is smaller with a pebbly beach and
a small harbour, it’s less attractive than its sandy neighbour though
it does have the advantage of lots of good tavernas nearby and easier
access to the town.
In the old town
with its narrow streets shaded by mulberry trees, traditional
authentic Greek life continues side by side with modern-day
activities. The warm hospitality of the locals and their friendly
temperament, make visitors feel part of their way of life. But what
is unique here is the evening, when the central area and the eastern
sea front is closed to traffic and all the restaurants spill out into
the streets and the squares; along the sea front many restaurants have
tables on the waters edge where you can sit and enjoy a nightcap or if
you’re up to it enjoy late nights in one of the bustly bars and clubs
that the village has to offer.
The resort of
Paleochora is a good base to explore the many wonderful sites in the
surrounding countryside, its one of main villages closest to the
famous Samaria Gorge, a must for any tourist visiting the area, other
popular day trips are by boat to Gavdos Island, the southernmost point
of Europe the charming traffic-less village of Loutro and seeing the
dolphins swim.
Paleochora
appeals to those who are looking for a beach destination in a scenic
setting with plenty of buzz but are anxious to avoid the really big
over-developed resorts.
