An Introduction To Paphos
|
Situated on the south west coast, Paphos
retains its charm despite its popularity as a premier holiday
resort. With a picturesque harbour (still used by local
fishermen) and dominated by the Fortress, it really has a lot
to offer. Immersed in history, Paphos was the Island's capital
in Roman times and is the legendary birthplace of Aphrodite -
the Goddess of Love & Beauty.
The main tourist area is centred in Kato Paphos, with its long stretch of
coastline and sandy/pebbly coves interspersed with a rocky coastline. An
extensive area across the road from the harbour houses the majority of
restaurants, tavernas, cafes, bars and shops. There are also several
tavernas and cafes along the coastal road opposite the beachfront hotels.
Tomb of the Kings road, which leads up to Coral Bay, has an abundance of hotels
and apartments, and the road is lined intermittently with restaurants, tavernas,
cafes and pubs. Coral Bay (15-20min ride from Kato Paphos) is undoubtedly the
best sandy beach in Paphos - with golden sand and inviting, clear blue waters.
The long stretch of road leading down to the beach, is lined with restaurants,
tavernas, cafes, bars and shops and is a mini resort in its own right.
Watersports, scuba diving and snorkelling are all readily availiable on most
of Paphos' beaches, as are the boat safaris, with trips along the coast- all the
way to Akamas. Other popular attractions include bowling, go- karting, horse
riding and fishing. Golf courses can be found at Aphrodite Hills, Tsada and
Secret Valley.
For a fun day out, the Aphrodite Water Park is a must - for visitors of all
ages!
Paphos is renowned for its fascinating archaeological sites - The Tomb of the
Kings - dating from around the 3rd century BC lies on the headland with great
views of the sea below. The Paphos Mosaics, St Paul's Pillar & Agia Kyriaki
Chrysopolitissa Church and the Byzantine Castle (with remnants of dungeons and
towers still visible) are all equally impressive sites and well worth a visit.
As is the Old Town of Paphos - Ktima - situated inland (3km from Kato Paphos)
where the locals live and work; with its enchanting Market selling local
produce, art and handicrafts, leather shoes and handbags, and quaint little
shops (which have remained unchanged for years), bordering the Market.
Nightlife in Paphos is varied and relaxed, with a great range
of culinary delights to suit all ages and taste - from
traditional Cypriot cuisine, International dishes, fresh
locally caught fish & shellfish and all the kid's favourites -
with restaurants, tavernas, cafes and pubs galore - you'll be
spoilt for choice. Experience traditional Cypriot dancing at
many tavernas or for the more energetic the Music bars and a
handful of nightclubs stay open till the early hours.
