This beautiful
island has had a chequered history; one that spans 9,000 years and
reads like a historical novel.
As the legendary birthplace for both Aphrodite and Adonis, Cyprus is
home to legends as well as a rich historical past. Domination by many
and varied rulers have all left their mark here. Foreign Kings,
Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar all played a part, with
England's Richard the Lion heart following the trend during the
Crusades.
Apart from its wealth of history, the island offers a host of natural
beauties. Drenched in year-round sunshine, the glistening sun warmed
beaches, punctuated by sheltered rocky coves fringe the crystal clear
sea, and in-land, cool pine forests cover the lower slopes of the
snow-capped Troodos Mountains.
Control of Cyprus was handed to Great Britain in 1878, and was a
colony until 1960. Cyprus went on to gain her independence from the UK
but still retained a very British touch, evident to this day. You
can't help feeling at home in a country where English is the second
language, driving is on the left, and signs are in English.
The Cypriot people are very hospitable, you are a friend, a guest on
the island, they will love you and extend their hospitability to you
as though you have been friends forever - which is probably why so
many people return year after year. |
