The circular and
pictureresque harbour of Rethymnon - the third largest town in Crete -
is dominated by a mighty 17th-century Venetian fortress, which soars
above the bustling old town. Rethymnon is a fascinating blend of
ancient and modern, browsing past its fashionable shops, restaurants
and nightclubs, or strolling along the shore road lined with palm
trees and pavement cafes, you can round a corner and suddenly find
yourself in a narrow maze of cobbled streets, overhung by the
balconies of old Turkish houses, Venetian facades and traditional
shops selling local crafts - this romantic old quarter draws visitors
from all over the world.
A palm-fringed
promenade backs a wonderful beach of pale sand and shingle which
stretches as far as the eye can see, Rethymnon is said to have some of
the best beaches in Crete, here’s where you'll find most of the
holiday accommodation, in smart modern hotels and apartments.
Rethymnon has spread in both directions along the coast, small resort
areas have sprung up along the way, with their own tavernas, bars and
mini-markets. Frequent local buses and taxis make it easy to head in
or out of town, whenever the fancy takes you.
Holidays in
Rethymnon enjoy the tremendous attractions of a picturesque town full
of fountains, archways, churches, Venetian architecture and Turkish
influences seen in the towns’ mosques and minarets. It’s full of
romantic cafes and bars many round the harbour where you will mix with
locals as well as fellow visitors. There’s plenty of nightlife too.
All in all the
mixture of old town and new, make this a superb choice for anyone
wanting to stay in an authentic Greek town with a great beach and
bustling friendly atmosphere. Stay in a Rethymnon Hotel and
